This term, we are going wild and studying a range of animals, habitats and exploring traditional tales and ‘tails’ then recreating our learning through performances for our friends and families. We will start with the dilemma facing Goldilocks during her trip to the woods and develop our understanding of the concept of 'breaking and entering' through victim statements in PSHE! The Three Bears will have their day in court and the hope will be that Goldilocks can be encouraged to change her ways. The work of Rudyard Kipling and his Jungle Book will feature as part of our literacy topic giving insight into the more exotic animals that we might find beyond the confines of our School Woodland.
Through this Module on Paws Claws and Whiskers, the Year 1 team will develop children’s knowledge of shape, colour, pattern and texture. Our pupils will observe, draw and recreate wild animals and pets and get to know their inner worlds through drama, roleplay and creative art. Collage and line drawing will both feature this term as we develop animal portraits to share with residents in a local Residential Care Home for the Elderly.
In PE we will discover if we can leap like a frog and learn about different animal poses in yoga. In science and art, we will discover the true meaning of camouflage both inside the classroom and in the woods. As the ground starts to thaw, we will investigate worms and their senses and learn about the vital work they do in our soil to help our plants grow. We will learn how to classify animals and above all, how to care for animals and their habitats in our woodland environment at school.
Maths work will focus on 2D and 3D shapes and we will revisit subtraction work and look at numbers and number facts to 20. We will study shapes and patterns in nature and learn how repeated patterns can help create camouflage to protect animals from their predators. Mapping work will extend from our local environment to a more global perspective on the main oceans and continents of the world.
RE will focus on Christian beliefs about what God is like this term. We will look at different ways of saying thank you in our day to day life and how we say sorry for things that have not gone well. Within our RE work we will draw links between the stories we cover in our literacy sessions to deepen our understanding of forgiveness, gratitude and asking for help when we can’t do things on our own.
PSHE will look at keeping ourselves safe. We will revisit online safety and help develop healthy attitudes to sleep and wellbeing. We will build upon the theme of asking for support by learning about people that help us in school and at home. We will further develop our understanding of keeping safe behaviour rules especially around touch and respecting personal space.
We look forward to sharing our work and creativity with you all soon so please watch this space for all you could ever wish to know about Paws Claws and Whiskers.
