Welcome to Rowan!
As a team we work hard to make the transition from reception to Year 1 as smooth as possible. Our priority is to help the children to settle with their new teachers and to ensure that they feel confident and happy to have a go at new challenges. In the first term, the mornings become more formal (often a practical approach) and then the afternoons are more in keeping with the EYFS play based learning approach through our carefully tailored Rainbow Learning. During this time, children can choose from up to 7 activities which have been chosen to target specific areas of learning across the curriculum to deepen their understanding of core subjects (literacy and maths) as well as others like science, geography, art, design for example. This proved very popular and effective last year.
As a school we are excited to be introducing Read, Write, Inc Phonics to enhance reading (and writing) skills. Children will be carefully grouped across all classes so that teaching will be specifically targeted to help them to learn at a faster pace. During literacy we will continue to explore books and have fun learning new stories with actions and story maps. The whole federation is also introducing White Rose which is a mastery approach to maths.
We also have a topic every half term and will be starting in September with the Seasons. Throughout the year our topics are related to buildings, animals, food and farming, emergency services and the local area of Bude. During the topics we will have the opportunity to invite visitors into the class and also to go on trips, especially in the local area. We welcome and share any homework the children may bring in, relating to our learning at school or our topics.
Year 1 P.E will be on a Monday morning (with Mr Dart) and a Friday (with Mrs Rosser). Please ensure your child has a full, labelled P.E kit in school on these days.
With Read, Write, Inc, children will be reading in class every day. On top of this, we aim to read with each child once a week in class, more where possible, so please ensure book bags are in class every day. Reading regularly is proven to be the most effective way to help a child to learn and anything you can do at home to support this makes an incredible difference. When you read at home, please log this in your child's reading record.
We look forward to welcoming your child into Rowan Class in September. The most important thing in the early days is that your child enjoys it and is happy to come in every day. The staff will be happy to talk with you and support in any way we can, to ensure the transition is as smooth as it can be. In Rowan class, we also use the app Classdojo to communicate. If you need a log in code please come and find Miss Price.
